Case IH Tractors: A Blast From The Past
As you probably know, Case and International Harvester merged in 1985, becoming one of the world’s largest agricultural equipment manufacturers. But let’s take a look back at the history of these two manufacturers, both of which have been producing quality tractors and equipment for more than a century.
Case Tractors: Quality Machines Since 1842
Case got its start before the Civil War as the J.I. Case Threshing Machine Company, and was founded in Racine, Wisconsin. Initially, the company focused on manufacturing threshing machines, which separated grain from chaff, and quickly became a leader in this area. As an interesting side note, the company’s owner, Jerome Increase Case, not only built threshers, but he also served as Racine’s mayor and even as a Wisconsin state senator.
In the late 1800s, Case expanded into steam-powered tractors, becoming one of the pioneers in steam engine technology for agriculture. By 1876, Case had developed the first portable steam engine and, over the following decades, became a leader in steam-powered farm equipment, producing the famous Case steam tractors.
As steam engines were phased out, Case transitioned to gasoline-powered tractors. In 1911, Case introduced its first gasoline-powered tractor, the Case 12-25, designed to provide more reliable power for larger farms. This marked the beginning of the company’s significant role in modern tractor manufacturing.
By the 1920s, Case was one of the largest and most respected producers of tractors and agricultural equipment in the United States. In the 1960s, Case expanded its product line to include more heavy construction equipment and strengthened its presence globally. The company also acquired several other brands, including David Brown Ltd., a British tractor manufacturer, in 1972, which helped broaden its agricultural machinery lineup.
International Harvester: An American Classic
International Harvester was founded in 1902 when Cyrus McCormick’s McCormick Harvesting Machine Company merged with several other agricultural equipment manufacturers.
Cyrus McCormick revolutionized agriculture with his invention of the mechanical reaper in the 1830s, and by the time IH was formed, McCormick’s company was already a leader in the agricultural industry.
International Harvester quickly became a dominant force in the agricultural machinery market, producing a wide range of farm equipment, including tractors, plows, combines, and threshers.
In 1924, IH introduced the Farmall tractor, one of the most important innovations in the history of farming. The Farmall was the first row-crop tractor, designed to handle both plowing and cultivating crops like corn, soybeans, and cotton. It could perform multiple tasks, such as pulling, planting, and harvesting, making it an incredibly versatile machine.
During World War II, International Harvester contributed to the war effort by manufacturing military trucks, tanks, and other machinery for the U.S. government. This experience expanded IH’s expertise in heavy-duty equipment.
As the years passed, IH faced some challenges in the 1970s and 1980s, and competition from John Deere and others lessened the company's market share. The merger between Case and IH in 1985 boosted the profile of IH and combined the expertise of both firms, carrying on the legacy of tractor production.
