6 Fun Facts About Tractors
While selling Mahindra tractor parts online is our main focus, we also have a deep appreciation for tractors in general and enjoy sharing a few fun facts about these important machines from time to time. Here are a few bits of information about tractors that you might not have known.
1. Petro-Powered Tractors Aren’t That Old
The first modern partially gas-powered tractors were produced in 1889 by the Charter Gas Engine Company, and this tractor model was powered by steam and a single-cylinder gasoline engine. Before that, steam-powered threshers had been in use, but these were rare and the main source of power for most farmers was the use or horse, oxen or manpower.
2. Tractors Developed Rapidly In The 20th Century
While it might have taken hundreds of years to move from horse-powered farming to steam engines to kerosene to gasoline engines, once we moved into gas power, and mass-produced tractors could be purchased relatively affordably, they sold like hotcakes. By the mid-1930s, more than a million tractors had been sold in the United States alone.
This means that from that first partially gas-powered engine in 1889 to mass production in the 1930s took only about 45 years. The earliest types of plows date back to about 1000 BC, which means while it took almost 2000 years to develop a gas-powered tractor, within 50 years of that invention, these mechanical marvels were a common site that transformed farming and allowed for mass production of all types of food.
3. Steel Wheels Used To Be The Norm
For the first 50 years or so, those gas-powered tractors used metal wheels rather than the typical plastic wheels we use today. The steel wheels added quite a bit of weight to the tractor and these tractor wheels also used spikes to improve traction. These tractors could not be run on normal roads, which meant they were as convenient as the wheels we use today which are created using durable plastic materials such as nylon and polyester.
4. Big Bud Is The World’s Largest Tractor
Big Bud, produced by Northern Manufacturing, is an impressive 28 feet in length and includes a 16-cylinder diesel engine. This monster machine can work more than an acre in just 60 seconds. Most of us certainly don’t need a tractor with quite that much power, but if you head on to YouTube you can find some fun videos of Big Bud hard at work.
5. Did John Deere’s Wife Choose The Colors?
Tractors come in many colors, but when you see that distinctive green body with yellow wheel rims, you know it’s a John Deere. These colors, as legend has it, were chosen by John Deere’s wife, and Mrs. Deere selected green to represent growing crops and yellow to represent the golden hue of crops that were ready to harvest.
6. John Deere Isn’t #1 Worldwide
While Americans still love their John Deere’s, the best-selling tractor brand worldwide is Mahindra. John Deere is the top seller in the U.S., but Mahindra may be on the rise with nearly 800 dealerships across the country. Other popular brands in the U.S. include Case IH, Kubota and Massey Ferguson.
