While Mahindra ceased production of the 485 DI way back in 1997, there are still quite a few of these durable models still in operation. It can be tough to find Aftermarket Mahindra 485 DI parts these days, but, a Reubicon Tractor Parts we have just about everything you might need for your 485 DI and at affordable prices. Before we dive into our selection of Aftermarket Mahindra tractor parts, let’s take a look at this popular tractor model from the past.
The Aftermarket Mahindra 485 DI
The Mahindra 485 DI was a 45-horsepower utility tractor produced between 1987 and 1997. This tractor featured a four-cylinder, liquid-cooled diesel engine, a rear lift capacity of 2,200 pounds and a fuel tank capacity of about 9 gallons. The transmission included eight forward gears and two reverse gears for maneuverability in just about any type of terrain or conditions.
Mahindra offers tractors in four categories – sub-compact, compact, compact utility and utility. The Mahindra 485 DI would be considered a compact utility tractor. Its combination of power and versatility makes it suitable for a range of farming applications.
Utility tractors like the 485 DI are versatile and designed for a variety of farming and agricultural tasks such as plowing, tilling, and transporting materials. Their moderate power and range of features make them suitable for medium-scale farming operations and other tasks requiring consistent, reliable performance.
In comparison with new Mahindra models, the 485 DI is fairly comparable with the Mahindra 2645 Shuttle tractor. The 2645 features 44 horsepower with a 3-point hitch lift capacity of 2,646 pounds and a loader lift capacity of 2,041 pounds, which is greater than the 485 DI.
The Mahindra 1640 is another similar model still produced by Mahindra. This tractor features slightly less horsepower (38.7 HP) than the 485 DI, but the 3-point hitch lift capacity is more than 2,600 pounds and the loader lift capacity is a comparable 1,850 pounds.
One key difference between the 485 DI and the new models is that the 485 utilized a constant mesh transmission system. The 2645 features a shuttle transmission, while the 1640 features either an HST transmission or a shuttle transmission.
The constant mesh system is more similar to a shuttle transmission in that both of these options use mechanical gears rather than hydraulic systems. Both shuttle and constant mesh provide multiple gear options with fixed ratios, which is ideal for tasks needing steady power and torque.
On the flip side, an HST (hydrostatic transmission) uses fluid pressure to vary the speed and direction of the tractor. HST also offers infinitely variable speeds controlled by a pedal, whereas constant mesh provides set speeds per gear.
Constant mesh is generally more efficient at transmitting engine power to the wheels than HST, as it doesn’t lose power through hydraulic fluid, making it well-suited for heavy pulling and fieldwork.
There are advantages and disadvantages to all three types of transmissions. Typically, a shuttle or constant mesh transmission is best for tasks requiring frequent directing changes and for plowing, tilling or other tasks that require uniform speed and power. These transmissions tend to be easier to maintain, as well.
An HST transmission is a good option for landscaping and mowing tasks, as well as loader work. If you are new to tractor use, an HST transmission is easier for beginners as there are no gear changes or clutch use.
